what are some easy chores for 10 year olds that actually help out around the house?

My kid just turned 10, and I’m thinking of giving them some responsibilities around the house. I’m looking for chores that are suitable for their age and actually help out, rather than just keeping them busy. What kind of chores have worked for other parents with kids this age?

We started with unloading the dishwasher, and my daughter actually enjoys it now. She also makes her own lunch for school most days and keeps her bathroom clean. What surprised me was how much she liked organizing the pantry after grocery shopping.

She still needs gentle reminders sometimes, but way less than I expected. I think around 10 they really want to feel helpful and capable of real tasks that matter to the family.

My kid helps by sorting laundry, loading the dishwasher, and taking out the bathroom trash. They also feed our dog daily. The dishwasher help really saves time each night.

my child is only 5 so I’m curious about this too for the future. right now we’re working on simple stuff like clearing their plate after meals.

do you find that 10 year olds can handle bigger tasks without needing reminders? I’m wondering if things like vacuuming a room or organizing their backpack for school would be realistic at that age.

what made you decide your child was ready for more responsibilities?
