how do you create an age-based chore list for kids that actually works?

I’ve tried making chore charts before but they never seem to stick. My kids are 6, 9, and 12 and I feel like I’m either giving them tasks that are too hard or too easy. The younger one gets frustrated and the older ones think their chores are babyish.

How do you figure out what chores are appropriate for different ages? And more importantly, how do you make a system that they’ll actually follow without me having to nag them constantly?

Any tips on what’s worked for your family would be really helpful.

I’m dealing with something similar with my 5 year old. We’ve been trying different things like sorting socks and feeding our pet, but I keep wondering if I’m picking the right tasks.

What I’m curious about is how you handle the gap between kids. Like, does your 9 year old help the 6 year old sometimes, or do you keep their responsibilities completely separate?

I’ve noticed my child does better when the task feels important rather than just busy work. Maybe the older kids feel that way too? I’m still figuring out how to make chores feel meaningful instead of just something they have to check off a list.
