I’m looking for help with making a chore chart for my kids that they’ll actually stick to. I’ve tried some before, but they usually lose interest pretty quickly. What designs or features have worked for you? Should I add rewards or stickers? Any layout advice to make it more kid-friendly would be great. Thanks for the tips!
Mine do better with visual stuff. We use a whiteboard with checkboxes they can actually cross off.
Started with just making beds and clearing plates. Added more once those became automatic. The physical act of marking it done seems to motivate them more than stickers did.
we made one last month and my 5 year old was excited at first but then kind of forgot about it. I think I made it too complicated with too many tasks.
Did you find that simple works better? I’m wondering if I should start over with maybe just 2-3 basic things instead of the 6 I put on there. Also curious if your kid gets bored with the same tasks or if routine helps them remember better?
We tried a few different versions before finding something that stuck. The one that worked best for us was actually pretty simple - just a grid with days of the week and basic tasks like feeding the cat or putting dishes away.
What made the difference was letting my kid pick which tasks they wanted each week rather than me assigning everything. They could swap things around or choose easier ones on busy school days. The flexibility seemed to help more than any fancy stickers or elaborate reward system we had tried before.
My kids love when they can see their progress adding up over time
We use a monthly calendar format where they get to color in squares for each completed task. At the end of the week, if they have a certain number of colored squares, they get to pick a small treat or extra screen time.
What really helped was making the chart together. They decorated it with markers and drew little pictures next to each chore. My younger one drew a tiny sock next to “put away laundry” and my older one added a happy face next to “feed the dog.”
The decorating part took forever but they felt proud of it and actually wanted to use it. Plus when they get tired of how it looks, we just make a new one together.
